The Horned Duke was the only Orbolian member of the court of the Queen of Twilight. When the Western Gate closed some 800 years ago, he succumbed to his race’s deep emotional reserves and stuck in the role of guarding the Queen’s maze against the mortal world, he rested inside his castle to watch and wait out the long centuries. Unlike the other members of the Queens court forced into exile when the gate closed, The Horned Duke believed the exile a punishment for some unknown transgression and so, while the Lord of Thundersparks and the Knight of the Morning Dew managed to carve out new kingdoms in-between the world of the fey and the world of mortals, the Horned Duke deteriorated. His duchy began to crumble except for the ivory castle at its center which became a timeless reminder of the fey lord’s faded glory.
Eventually, mortal war found its way to the territory of the fey lord. Two armies from the kingdoms of Aphasius and Cliops, leftovers from the old kingdom of Aversill, fought through the Lantern Wood until ending up on the outskirts of the Horned Duke’s domain. He cursed both armies, turning them into moss monsters to help him guard his domain.
Recently, the Horned Duke was attacked and killed by the characters as they passed through to the city of the Twilight Queen. The physical form of the fey lord is dead but whether this means that his long term as guard of the maze is now done remains to be seen.
