Gnolls are the predominant race on the Sentinel plain and can be found all the way from the Prynne Sea down to the Gosh Gelios. Out on the Land of the March, gnolls form into warbands of varying size to raid. They will raid each other if no other target presents itself and centuries of old feuds keep the gnolls from forming into larger groups (like cities or kingdoms). Human encroachment into gnoll land has, however, presented the gnolls with new targets for their ferocity. All cities on the march have had to defend against gnoll attacks.
Weep not, however, for the poor lost territory of the gnolls for along with their maneaters, they are also cannibals, and demon worshippers. Fear, the ability to resist and the ability to cause it in one’s enemies (and subordinates) is the central tenet of gnoll social hierarchy. Gnolls tend to form into warbands only because it offers them a greater chance to feed upon the weaker, both economically and literally.
For humans, gnoll demon worship provides the greatest component of their threat. True, gnolls are ferocious and capable fighters, but in this capacity, their best rarely rival their human counterparts. They simply don’t live long enough to become warriors of enough renown (the target on their backs gets bigger and bigger). Gnoll clerics, however, have ridiculous inroads to power because they are unfettered by the need to pray for virtuous spells and because they empower their spell use through sacrifice.
